Customer scenario
The customer asks whether children or infants need a ticket when travelling on a bus.
Common customer questions:
- “Does my baby need a bus ticket?”
- “Can my child travel for free?”
- “Do children need their own seat?”
- “Is there a child discount on bus tickets?”
Infants (under 2 years old)
- Most bus operators allow one infant under the age of 2 to travel free of charge, provided the infant:
- Sits on an adult’s lap
- Does not occupy a separate seat
- Any additional infants or children must have a paid ticket
⚠️ These rules are subject to each bus operator’s individual policies.
Children (2 years and older)
- Children 2 years and older must:
- Occupy their own seat
- Travel with a paid ticket
- Some bus operators offer a child discount
If a child discount applies:
- The child must present a birth certificate on the day of departure
- If the birth certificate is not presented, or the child is over the qualifying age:
- The fare difference must be paid at departure
Important information to communicate
- Child and infant travel rules vary by bus operator
- Final acceptance is at the bus operator’s discretion on the day of travel
- Customers should be advised to carry all required documentation
What NOT to advise
- Do not guarantee free travel for infants on all bus operators
- Do not confirm child discounts without advising about birth certificate requirements
- Do not override bus operator rules
